Once we’d made the rounds of the side roads that branched off Foxbridge Lane, I asked Cavallo to drop me back at the Explorer. Before I got out of the Jeep, I asked, “What did you make of Michelle Coe?”

“It’s hard to say. She’s really scared about something. Or someone.”

“Well, it can’t be Chaz.”

Cavallo chuckled. “Nope.”

“So Michelle said the sister ‘used to’ go out with Chaz. I wonder who she’s with now. If anyone.”

“Oh, I met him. Another charmer. Michelle managed to give me an address for her sister, Suzanne, on the condition I keep her out of it. I told her not to worry, I could have gotten the address on my own, she just saved me a step.”

“She really is nervous.”

Cavallo nodded. “Suzanne, too. Mind you, the boyfriend was there. I just went through the usual series of questions about Buddy and left. Neither of them said squat. I felt they were telling the truth about Buddy. I don’t think they know where he is.”

“Is the boyfriend in the same line of work as Chaz was?”

“Scumbag Drugdealers, Inc.? Yes. His name is Darryl Cooper and we’re familiar with his resume.”

“I guess that would make them act skittish with you on their doorstep. However…”

“What, Towns?”

“Well, what’s the other big unsolved crime we have on our hands?”

Cavallo laughed out loud. “Not bad, Towns, not bad at all. You think Darryl was behind the wheel when Chaz went down?”

“It’s possible. Who knows what was going on with the two of them? Maybe Chaz just brought too much drama into their world. Darryl had enough and got rid of the aggravation. Now, the women are especially worried because they know Buddy’s in trouble. Maybe that’s what gave Michelle the courage to speak to me on the street.”

“I’ll check out Darryl’s vehicle first thing in the morning. Thanks for the idea.”

“No problem. I just wish we were closer to finding the kid. Bye for now.”

I know I shouldn’t have been expecting a miracle, but there was a tiny part of me that had thought if someone would just look north of the highway, Buddy’s location would be apparent and he could be rescued safely. And that someone would be me. It was a good refresher on both humility, and the foundation of police work. Persistence. And maybe a dash of intuition? I wasn’t about to give up, yet.

I met up with Nick to return the Explorer. “I guess you didn’t find him?” he asked.

I shook my head. “Danny Cavallo was out on Foxbridge, too. He thinks it’s a possibility that Buddy’s hidden out there. But there’s a lot of distance to cover when you look at the grid of country roads. We only drove down a few. The best thing would be if he can convince the rest of them in CIU to do a door-to-door out past the golf club. As soon as possible. The kid’s been gone three days now.”

I handed Nick the keys, and he just laughed, “Holly, get in. I’ll drop you at home before I park it.
