Once weâd made the rounds of the side roads that branched off Foxbridge Lane, I asked Cavallo to drop me back at the Explorer. Before I got out of the Jeep, I asked, âWhat did you make of Michelle Coe?â
âItâs hard to say. Sheâs really scared about something. Or someone.â
âWell, it canât be Chaz.â
Cavallo chuckled. âNope.â
âSo Michelle said the sister âused toâ go out with Chaz. I wonder who sheâs with now. If anyone.â
âOh, I met him. Another charmer. Michelle managed to give me an address for her sister, Suzanne, on the condition I keep her out of it. I told her not to worry, I could have gotten the address on my own, she just saved me a step.â
âShe really is nervous.â
Cavallo nodded. âSuzanne, too. Mind you, the boyfriend was there. I just went through the usual series of questions about Buddy and left. Neither of them said squat. I felt they were telling the truth about Buddy. I donât think they know where he is.â
âIs the boyfriend in the same line of work as Chaz was?â
âScumbag Drugdealers, Inc.? Yes. His name is Darryl Cooper and weâre familiar with his resume.â
âI guess that would make them act skittish with you on their doorstep. Howeverâ¦â
âWhat, Towns?â
âWell, whatâs the other big unsolved crime we have on our hands?â
Cavallo laughed out loud. âNot bad, Towns, not bad at all. You think Darryl was behind the wheel when Chaz went down?â
âItâs possible. Who knows what was going on with the two of them? Maybe Chaz just brought too much drama into their world. Darryl had enough and got rid of the aggravation. Now, the women are especially worried because they know Buddyâs in trouble. Maybe thatâs what gave Michelle the courage to speak to me on the street.â
âIâll check out Darrylâs vehicle first thing in the morning. Thanks for the idea.â
âNo problem. I just wish we were closer to finding the kid. Bye for now.â
I know I shouldnât have been expecting a miracle, but there was a tiny part of me that had thought if someone would just look north of the highway, Buddyâs location would be apparent and he could be rescued safely. And that someone would be me. It was a good refresher on both humility, and the foundation of police work. Persistence. And maybe a dash of intuition? I wasnât about to give up, yet.
I met up with Nick to return the Explorer. âI guess you didnât find him?â he asked.
I shook my head. âDanny Cavallo was out on Foxbridge, too. He thinks itâs a possibility that Buddyâs hidden out there. But thereâs a lot of distance to cover when you look at the grid of country roads. We only drove down a few. The best thing would be if he can convince the rest of them in CIU to do a door-to-door out past the golf club. As soon as possible. The kidâs been gone three days now.â
I handed Nick the keys, and he just laughed, âHolly, get in. Iâll drop you at home before I park it.
